Hamlet and 1984

1984 by George Orwell and Hamlet by William Shakespeare have many similarities. For one, in Hamlet there is one man trying to control everyone, and has such a thirst for power, he even kills his own brother. In 1984 the big power is Big Brother, who controls everyone and everything in his state. Hamlets uncle, Claudius wants to control everything and everyone, but is not fit to be a good king. In both there is one character that either tries to take that ruling party down, or completely goes against him. prince Hamlet knows his uncle is not a good fit, not only to control the kingdom, but also to be his mother's new husband. He makes his feelings very apparent, he does not like Claudius.

Hamlet and Lord of the Flies

There are quite a few similarities between Lord of the Flies by William Golding, and Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. Both have one person trying to rule the population, Claudius in Hamlet, and Jack in Lord of the Flies. Both characters kill someone to stay, or obtain power. Both the ruling characters are not good rulers, even though they claim to be. They both are willing to do whatever it takes in order to win. In Lord of the Flies, there is a character that only wants what is good for the group, and does not care for Jack, the cruel, savage ruler.  Hamlet wants good for his kingdom, and knows that Claudius cannot fulfill his duties properly as king. Polonious is similar to Simon because like Simon, he found out the truth only to die before it could be told, and they also died in similar ways (being stabbed to death). However, The way he behaves throughout the novel is more similar to Piggy. In this case, the demon that the boys think is on the island is like the ghost that Hamlet, and his guards see. Something that brings fear, seems so real, but is only imagination or hallucination. Ralph is obviously Hamlet, trying to make the best decisions for everyone, not caring only about himself, but the future of the group. Hamlet knows leadership under Claudius will not end well, just as Ralph knows Jack will not lead the group to survival. Both Hamlet and Ralph try to act out and overthrow the leaders, only to make themselves look worse.

Winston is stuck in a society where everyone is scared and an entire society does exactly what they are told. Winston eases into going against the status quo, and starts doing things that are not permitted in his society. He confesses his attraction to a woman names Julia, and they fall in love. Both Hamlet, and Winston have a forbidden love interest. In Winston's society, love is not permitted, and one must have permission to marry. In Hamlet's society he is not permitted to marry anyone who is not of royal blood, he loves Ophelia but traditionally he would not be permitted to marry her. Like Winston's mother, Hamlet's mother died is a sacrificial way. Winston's mother sacrificed herself so Winston would live, and Hamlet's mother (accidentally) drunk the poison meant for Hamlet, thus saving him if he had not been grazed by a poisoned blade.

Fun video about Hamlet and 1984

Hamlet and The Great Gatsby have many things in common. They both have a feeling of a lingering being watching them, Dr. TJ Eckleburg in The Great Gatsby and the ghost of Hamlet's father. There are some aspects of Tom that are like Claudius, such as the power and money to control people. However, there are also some aspects of Claudius that are in Gatsby, such as the need to throw big parties, and doing anything it takes to get what he wants. Gatsby also has some similar traits as Hamlet, such as the emotional need to rebel against a ruling power. Tom, being old money has more power, and has more people willing to help him. Any time Tom makes a mess, he has the power and money to leave it to others to clean up after him. Ophelia is Daisy, looking for something more in life, and following the path she feels will take her to love and happiness. Nick is like Horatio, being the closest thing Hamlet (Gatsby) has to a best friend. Nick is ultimately there for Gatsby, does almost everything Gatsby asks of him, and becomes a great friend to him. Horatio was the first person to tell Hamlet of his father's ghost, and he even accompanied Hamlet to confront the ghost. Horatio also helps Hamlet in his plan to undermine Claudius and find out if Claudius is in fact responsible for the death of Hamlet's father.
